Drawings By Andrew Bates

Andrew Bates is a hyperrealism artist from Nebraska working in charcoal and graphite on smooth Bristol paper. His drawings emphasize precision, texture, and depth, focusing on highly detailed realism that captures both physical accuracy and emotional presence.

Bates specializes in subjects that reward close observation—portraits and animals in particular—where subtle shifts in value and fine mark-making bring form and expression to life. Through layered graphite and controlled charcoal application, he builds rich tonal ranges, sharp highlights, and soft transitions that create a strong sense of realism and dimensionality.

Each piece is approached with patience and technical discipline, prioritizing accuracy while allowing the character of the subject to emerge. Bates’ work invites viewers to slow down and engage closely, rewarding attention to detail through craftsmanship and lifelike representation.

Charcoal On Smooth Bristol

“Art is not only a reflection of my own vision, but a collaboration built around yours. Each piece begins with an idea, a feeling, or a story that deserves to be brought to life, and my goal is to translate that vision into a tangible work on paper. Through careful observation, precision, and intention, I strive to capture more than just an image—I aim to convey emotion, narrative, and depth.

Using something as simple as a pencil and a sheet of paper, I focus on the subtle details that give a piece its character and meaning. Every line is placed with purpose, allowing the artwork to tell a story that resonates beyond the surface. Whether creating a personal commission or an original work, my approach remains the same: to honor the subject, respect the process, and deliver a piece that feels both timeless and deeply personal.”

White Charcoal On Black Sketch Paper

“Art became more than a creative pursuit—it emerged as a source of healing and quiet resilience. Through the practice of drawing, I have found a meaningful way to navigate the challenges of everyday life, transforming emotion into carefully crafted works on paper. Each piece reflects not only technical skill, but a deep sense of purpose rooted in empathy and connection.

Creating art for others has been especially impactful. From honoring beloved pets who have crossed the rainbow bridge to bringing cherished characters vividly to life, ,y work is driven by the stories and emotions behind each commission. Seeing a finished piece evoke tears, comfort, or genuine joy is an experience I value beyond measure. It is this ability to create something deeply personal—art that resonates, heals, and endures—that continues to inspire my work and defines my artistic journey.” - Andrew Bates

My Graphite Work

“Art is not simply something I enjoy—it is something I cannot imagine my life without. For a long time, my only goals and aspirations were centered around being a husband and a father. While those roles remain the most important parts of my life, art helped me discover a deeper sense of purpose and reconnect with a passion that mental illness had taken from me during my youth.

Through art, I found healing, self-discovery, and direction. Creating allows me to express what words often cannot, and it continues to shape who I am both personally and creatively. I know this experience is shared by many others on their own artistic journeys, which is why I hold the art community in such high regard.

Along the way, I have met countless kind and supportive individuals, as well as incredibly talented artists whose work and insight have helped me grow. I do not consider my craft perfected, and I welcome thoughtful critique from fellow artists. I believe growth comes from remaining open, curious, and willing to learn.

I truly believe many people underestimate how much we can learn from one another. By keeping an open mind and an eagerness to absorb knowledge, we allow ourselves to evolve. There is always more to learn, and I am grateful to be part of a community that continually inspires growth, creativity, and connection.” - Andrew Bates
